• Australian painted snipes have been recorded from Hird Swamp in the IBA.
• Painted snipes are short-legged, long-billed birds similar in shape to the true snipes, but much more brightly coloured.
• The three species of painted snipe are not closely related to the typical snipes, and are placed in their own family, the Rostratulidae.
• It is also the only breeding ground in Hong Kong for the rare painted snipe, a chicken-sized bird with long bill, short legs and colorful facial markings.
• Threatened species include the fish Murray cod, trout cod and Murray hardyhead, the birds Australian painted snipe, Australasian bittern and superb parrot, as well as swamp wallaby grass.
• The flood plains are especially important for the diversity and richness of their avifauna, particularly painted snipe " Rostratula benghalensis ", black-winged stilt " Himantopus himantopus ", and red-wattled lapwing " Vanellus indicus ".
